Hourly trains return to Okehampton

Updated: May 17, 2022

Hourly trains on the Dartmoor Line between Okehampton and Exeter begin on Sunday 15th May. A two hourly service has been running since last December.

This latest service upgrade comes after a two week closure which allowed engineers to further improve the drainage and track bed between Coleford and Fatherford to enable faster line speeds ready for the increase to hourly services.

The first of the hourly trains to leave Exeter Central on Sunday morning will be the 0837 (2K03) service stopping at Crediton on the way. It'll return from Okehampton at 0925 (2R53) reaching Exeter Central at 1005. The last train leaves Okehampton at 2201.

Weekday trains begin with the 0631 from Exeter St David's returning to Exeter Central at 0725. The final service from Exeter St David's is at 2115 returning from Okehampton at 2219.

Richard Burningham, Manager of the Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership, said: “It is incredible to think that from 15 May, not six months since the Dartmoor Line reopened, Okehampton will have trains every hour through much of the day, seven days a week".

The so called Dartmoor Line was the first to reopen under the Government's drive to reverse the Beeching closures although passenger trains stopped running to Okehampton in June 1972 - nine years after the good Doctor published his report.
