GWR to Axminster

Updated: May 17, 2022

GWR's introducing an extra evening train to Axminster.

It's extending its 1631 Barnstaple to Exeter Central train into east Devon.

The service (2L92) will arrive in Axminster at 1828 passing the 1520 ex Waterloo at Honiton.

It will not return from Axminster in service. Instead it will travel empty to Castle Cary via Yeovil Pen Mill as 5L90 and return vis the same route reaching Exeter depot at 2225.

South Western Railway used to run an early evening train to Axminster but last year it was dropped. SWR said it was "an inefficient use of resources and in some cases have had a negative impact on the performance on the single line section between Pinhoe and Honiton".

GWR says that while it is only one service a day to begin with, if demands warrants this could be the start of more frequent stops.

This new GWR service is a start towards building the Devon Metro aspiration of a two trains per hour frequency between Exeter and Axminster. This requires investment in additional track capacity between Pinhoe and Honiton. In 2019, Devon County Council was told this could take another 10 years to accomplish.
