Avocet Line improvements

Network Rail is extending the eastbound platform at St James Park to accommodate four car trains. The station was opened as Lion's Holt in 1906 but its name was changed to in October 1946. The images below show work taking place over the recent school half term break. Platforms at Lympstone Commando station have also lengthened. The aim is to reduce delays on both the Exmouth and the Exeter to Waterloo line.

During the recent closure, track at Exmouth Junction (see before and after images below) was renewed. The crossover was extended to allow the speed limit to be raised from 25 to 40mph. The Exmouth line branches to the right in front of the signal box which opened on 15 November 1959. It then had 64-levers but they've been replaced by a modern panel. The box controls the level crossing and signals at Pinhoe and also supervises all movements on the Exmouth branch, including the passing loop and CCTV level crossing at Topsham.
