More strikes on the way

Passengers on the Exeter, east Devon and Waterloo line could soon find their journeys disrupted again. Staff at South Western Railway have voted to hold more strikes as part of a dispute over the future of guards on trains where the driver can close the doors. The BBC reports that 416 out of the 850 RMT union members involved voted to take action. The company says it's disappointed with the result. No date's yet been set for the action

The last strike in December 2019 lasted 27 days. The dispute has been going on for more than two years. Earlier this week the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said SWR's franchise was "not sustainable" after the company posted a £137m loss. Contingency measures include issuing a short-term contract to SWR's owners or moving its operations to the Department for Transport as so called "operator of last resort".
