HS2 and the South West

There are calls for better links to HS2 for passengers from the south west.

The multi billion pound line is designed to increase capacity between London and Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds . Today the group Greengauge 21, which researches and promotes the benefits of a better rail network, is calling for improved connections between Cross Country Trains and HS2 in Birmingham. It also wants the line between Bristol and the Midlands upgraded.

Greengauge 21 says it wants to see a national highspeed rail network that is fully integrated with today’s rail system. It says the location of the HS2 station at Curzon Street in Birmingham presents a problem. It's 10 minutes walk from New Street and will make connections difficult. It says HS2 lines to the north east should be diverted to New Street so that Cross Country trains from the south west can take advantage of the High Speed route.

In a report called "Beyond HS2", Greengauge 21 also says the former Midland Railway line between Birmingham and Bristol Parkway should be upgraded to accommodate trains running at between 200 and 250 kilometres per hour.
