The oldest and one of the last

Crediton signal box on the former LSWR line to Barnstaple is the oldest signal box of its kind remaining in use. It was built in 1875 and is now Grade 2 listed. Crediton is the point where the token giving access to the line to Eggesford is handed over. The box also controls the Crediton level crossing and the Okehampton line as far as Okehampton station (which is a separate single track now that the Coleford Junction box has closed).

Crediton station was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened by the Exeter and Crediton Railway on 12 May 1851. The line was extended to Barnstaple on 1 August 1854 and a branch to Okehampton opened in 1871. By the end of the 19th Century London and South Western Railway trains through Crediton reached Ilfracombe, Torrington, Padstow, Plymouth and Bude.

Only three other ex LSWR signal boxes remain in use and they're all on the London Waterloo to Portsmouth line.
