Barnstaple Platform Two

Rails and sleepers recovered during Network Rail's recent Tarka Line track renewal programme could be relayed along platform two at Barnstaple to increase flexibly and to create the possibility of the return of charter trains according to RAIL magazine. At present all trains leave and arrive at platform one at the former Junction station. From December 15th three extra trains were introduced on the weekday service on the Tarka Line although they all terminate in Exeter now rather than running through to Exmouth. More seats have also been added to trains on the line. Recently Devon County Council was told that there was no prospect of running through trains between Barnstaple and London in the foreseeable future due to a lack of passing places on the mainly single track route. It's also worth noting that GWR's eight pacer class 143 units (see below) will continue in service until at least May 2020 as the cascade of units from the Bristol area grinds on.
